Into The Ranks Of America’s Finest
2016 was a year of great change and transition for museums.
Many flagship institutions in the U.S. are striving to reach new audiences and develop engaging new programming and educational initiatives.
One trend that has been widely seen over the past several years continued into 2016. Museums across the country are facing head-on the challenges posed by aging facilities, out-dated infrastructure, inadequate technology and congested space.
The solution for many: renovation, expansion or new construction.
The McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College’s critically acclaimed teaching museum, was one of those institutions.
In need of an upgraded facility with more space to house their growing collection, the museum began the project in 2014, designed by archtecture firm Dimella Shaffer. Consigli Construction Co. began construction more than a year later.
The McMullen’s new home is a Roman Renaissance Revival mansion, built by the Boston Archdiocese in 1927. The renovation, which included a two-story, 7,000-square-foot glass-wrapped addition, allowed them to more than double their exhibit space and incorporate climate control technology that will help to protect their collection for years to come.
We aimed to build a state-of-the-art exhibition space that would serve the needs of our students and faculty and would be welcoming to the community. The planning process was complicated and the architect’s drawings went through much iteration. We opted for large galleries with maximum flexibility enabling display of a vast range of objects.

Integral Storage Solutions was hired by Consigli Construction Co. to provide mechanically-assisted, Lateral Mobile Art Storage Racks that allow McCullen to optimize the use of space while providing protection and accessibility to stored art works.
Our 20 years of experience working with museums, galleries and exhibition facilities helped to ensure McMullen received the most efficient, practical storage solution to house and protect their valuable collection.
